Native smokes are cigarettes manufactured on First Nations territory and sold by Indigenous-owned retailers. They cost a fraction of what the same quantity costs at a convenience store, and the reason is simple: most of a store-bought carton’s price is tax, not tobacco.
We’re Mohawk Smoke, an Indigenous-owned retailer on Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory in Ontario. Cartons start at $42 and fall to $31.50 on volume. We ship anywhere in Canada in 1 to 3 business days, free over $300.

What are native smokes?
They’re full cartons of 200 king size cigarettes, ten packs of twenty, made on reserve by Indigenous-owned manufacturers. Most of the brands you’ll see across the native market — Canadian, BB, Playfare’s, Putter’s, Nexus, disCOUNT — come out of Smokeway, the largest of them.
They arrive in plain packaging, which is the federal standard for every cigarette sold in Canada now, native or otherwise. The brand name is printed in a standard typeface rather than in brand colours, so a carton of BB Lights and a carton of Canadian Lights look much alike on the outside. Inside, they’re different blends.
Why native smokes cost less
A carton at a Canadian convenience store runs roughly $110 to $165. Of that, somewhere between $76 and $119 is federal excise duty and provincial tobacco tax stacked on top of each other. The tobacco itself is a small part of what you’re paying for.
Native smokes are manufactured and sold on reserve, which is why the same carton reaches you at $42. You’re paying for the product rather than the tax layered over it.
Are native smokes any good?
They’re a different smoke, and it’s worth knowing that before you order. Native tobacco tends to run heavier than mass-market brands — fuller on the draw, a touch more body. People coming off du Maurier or Player’s often notice it on the first pack.
That’s a matter of matching the right brand rather than a quality problem. The native range spans from genuinely mild to genuinely strong, and there’s a brand at every point on that ladder. Pick the right one and most people stop noticing the difference inside a week.
If you’re switching from a mainstream brand, two are the usual starting points: Putter’s Light, the mildest cigarette in the native range, and Playfare’s Lights, which is cleaner and slightly sweeter with a faster burn. Both are $42.
Is this a legit place to buy native smokes?
Fair question, and worth answering straight. Here’s what you can check.
Mohawk Smoke is an Indigenous-owned business on Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory in Ontario. The cigarettes are manufactured on reserve and ship from here — that’s the whole reason the price is what it is.
If the packaging looks plain, that’s the law, not a counterfeit. Canadian law requires every cigarette sold in the country — native or mass-market — to come in standardised packaging, with the brand name in a fixed typeface and no brand colours or logos. A carton of BB Lights and a carton of du Maurier both arrive looking like a plain box. Anyone who hasn’t bought cigarettes since the rules changed sometimes assumes plain packaging means fake. It doesn’t.
The brands come from Smokeway, the largest native tobacco manufacturer in Canada, who produce most of what’s sold across the native market — Canadian, BB, Playfare’s, Putter’s, Nexus and others. These aren’t unbranded mystery cartons; they’re established brands with their own followings.

Questions about native smokes
Can I buy native smokes online in Canada?
Yes. Order here, pay online, and we ship from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory to anywhere in Canada in 1 to 3 business days. You don’t need to travel to a reserve.
How much is a carton of native smokes?
$42 for most brands. Elite and Canadian Goose Slides are $47.50, Vanta Menthol is $50. Order 40 cartons or more and the standard carton drops to $31.50.
Why are native smokes so much cheaper?
Because the price of a convenience store carton is mostly tax. Federal excise duty and provincial tobacco tax account for roughly $76 to $119 of a $110 to $165 carton. Native smokes are made and sold on reserve, so what you pay is much closer to the cost of the product itself.
Are native smokes the same as regular cigarettes?
Same format — 200 king size cigarettes per carton, ten packs of twenty, in the plain packaging every Canadian cigarette now uses. The blends differ. Native tobacco generally runs a little heavier, though the range spans from very mild to full strength.
Which native smoke is closest to the brand I smoke now?
Canadian Classics Original is the usual match for du Maurier, and Canadian Full for Player’s. Our brand equivalents guide works through the mainstream brands one at a time.
Do I have to be a certain age?
You need to be of legal smoking age in your province to order.
How long does delivery take?
1 to 3 business days for the large majority of orders placed before cut-off, anywhere in Canada.
Is there a discount for larger orders?
Yes, and it applies on its own. The price steps down at 5, 21 and 40 cartons with no code needed.
Ready to order?
Cartons from $42, down to $31.50 at forty. Free shipping over $300. Delivered anywhere in Canada in 1 to 3 business days, in packaging that says nothing about what’s inside.
Not sure which to pick? Start with the strength table — every standard carton is the same price, so there’s nothing to lose by trying one.
Health warning: Smoking is addictive and harmful to health. These products contain nicotine and are for adult smokers of legal smoking age only.
