What makes it a maduro

Maduro describes a very dark shade of wrapper leaf — and how it gets there matters more than the colour.

These leaves are harvested from the top of the shade-grown plant, where they take the most sun and develop the most oil. After air curing they go through an additional fermentation beyond the standard process. That produces the dark, oily appearance and the sweetness sitting on top of the blend.

Partagás is known for a deep, earthy character built on Vuelta Abajo filler and binder. The maduro wrapper lays sweetness over that — the contrast is the point.

Why it’s hard to find

When it launched in 2015 it was the first Partagás vitola dedicated to a maduro wrapper, and it remains exclusive to La Casa del Habano and Habanos Specialists rather than general retail.

Habanos had only done this once before, with the Cohiba Maduro 5 range in 2007.

How it smokes

Medium to full, and about an hour. The maduro wrapper gives a sweeter top note than a standard Partagás — the brand’s earthiness underneath, a richer finish over it.
