A cigar from one village

The Le Hoyo Series is built on a simple idea: each cigar uses tobacco from a single named place.

Le Hoyo de San Juan (2014) came from San Juan y Martínez. Le Hoyo de Río Seco (2018) from Río Seco. This one comes entirely from San Luis — the municipality in Pinar del Río that much of the cigar world considers the finest tobacco ground in Cuba.

San Luis is where the Cuchillas de Barbacoa farm sits — the land Alejandro Robaina made famous, and the only Cuban farm ever to have a cigar brand named after its grower.

Every leaf in this cigar comes from that municipality. That’s the whole premise.

The Fragancias vitola

At 52 × 160mm this is a new size in the Habanos system, carrying a factory name that didn’t exist before this release: Fragancias, meaning scents.

It’s longer than most recent releases. Where the trend has been shorter and thicker, this goes the other way — the length gives the blend room to develop over a long smoke.

How it smokes

Hoyo de Monterrey is the mildest of the major Cuban marques, and this stays true to that. Habanos describe it as mild in character with a light caramel wrapper carrying a natural silky sheen, a smooth draw and compact light grey ash.

Expect woody notes and tobacco sweetness rather than power. An hour-plus cigar you can smoke in the afternoon without it taking over.

Good for: anyone who finds Partagás too heavy, or who wants a long elegant smoke rather than an intense one.

Not for: anyone chasing strength — the Partagás Maduro No. 1 is the better choice there.

Why it’s here early

Habanos launched this in Germany through Fifth Avenue Products, their distributor for Germany, Austria and Poland. Distribution elsewhere has been gradual, and most Canadian retailers don’t have it yet.
