What Gauloises is
A French brand launched in 1910, built on dark caporal tobacco rather than the Virginia blends that dominate the English-speaking market. That’s the whole difference — dark tobacco is heavier, earthier and considerably stronger, with a distinctive smell that anyone who’s spent time in France will recognise.
The blue pack with the winged helmet became a piece of French cultural furniture, associated with writers, filmmakers and the Resistance. It’s owned today by Imperial Brands.
Availability in Canada
Not sold here in any meaningful way. Dark tobacco has never had a Canadian market to speak of, and plain packaging plus the tax structure makes niche imports commercially unviable.
