Federal excise duty
The Canada Revenue Agency charges $0.97299 per five cigarettes — about 19.46 cents each, or $38.92 per carton of 200. Identical in every province, adjusted each 1 April against inflation.
BC tobacco tax
British Columbia charges 32.5 cents per cigarette.

Why cigarettes cost more in BC than Alberta
Two reasons. BC’s tobacco tax is $65 a carton against Alberta’s $60 — and Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so only 5% GST applies there, where BC adds PST on top of GST.

Native cigarettes: why they cost less
Native cigarettes are manufactured at licensed First Nations facilities in Canada and sold by Indigenous retailers under Indigenous tobacco rights. They aren’t subject to the same provincial tobacco tax structure.
That, plus a supply chain with no national distributor and no retail markup, is the whole difference. It isn’t cheaper tobacco — it’s the absence of $65 a carton in provincial tax.

Why there’s no native retailer in BC
Canada’s Indigenous tobacco manufacturing is concentrated in Ontario and Quebec — Six Nations of the Grand River near Brantford, where Grand River Enterprises operates, and Kahnawake near Montreal, home to Rainbow Tobacco.
There’s no equivalent presence in British Columbia. For BC smokers, delivery isn’t a convenience — it’s the only route.
