What Belmont is
A Canadian brand introduced in the early 1960s by Benson & Hedges (Canada), built around a charcoal filter tip at a time when most cigarettes used plain cellulose acetate. That filter was the brand’s identity, and the result was a noticeably smoother, less harsh smoke.
It’s produced in Canada by Rothmans, Benson & Hedges, the Canadian arm of Philip Morris International.
The brand was called Belmont Milds from 1975 until 2007, when Canadian manufacturers agreed to drop “light” and “mild” from packaging — the terms implied a safer product, which wasn’t true. Nothing inside the pack changed.
Current range includes Belmont, Belmont Silver (the extra light version) and Belmont Edge, a slim format introduced in 2009. The menthol variant remains available despite the broader Canadian restrictions on menthol.
