The Topes first appeared as a Habanos Edición Limitada in 2016 and sold through almost immediately. It was popular enough that Habanos brought it back in 2019 as part of Trinidad’s standard range, alongside the Media Luna and Esmeralda.

That’s unusual. Most Limited Editions stay limited — a vitola earning a permanent place says something about how it was received.

Trinidad’s history

Trinidad was created as a diplomatic gift in the same tradition as Cohiba, rolled at the El Laguito factory. The blend is close to Cohiba’s but without the third fermentation Cohiba receives — the main reason Trinidad costs less while sharing much of the character.

Until 1998 the only vitola was the Fundador, and it wasn’t sold publicly at all. It reached general release that year and the range has expanded slowly since.

Every Trinidad carries a pigtail cap — the twisted flourish at the head that became the brand’s signature.

How it smokes

At 56 ring gauge over a short 125mm, the Topes is wide and relatively quick — around an hour. The gauge gives a cool draw and plenty of smoke volume.

Medium strength. Reviewers consistently note chocolate and nuts on the aroma, with bread and a touch of smoky spice on the cold draw.

Good for: anyone who wants Cohiba-adjacent character without Cohiba pricing, or who likes a wide gauge in a shorter format.
